UN approves harsh new sanctions for North Korea

North Korea faces harsh new sanctions after the United Nations Security Council unanimously passed a resolution drafted by the regime’s closest ally China.
The sanctions aim to cut off funds for Pyongyang’s nuclear programmes, as the United States Ambassador to the UN explains:
“Yet, we’ve got to be honest that while previous multilateral efforts, including the four previous sanctions resolution by this council have undoubtedly made it more difficult for North Korea to advance its nuclear weapons programs, the regime continues to plow ahead, as it demonstrated the last two months,” said Power.
The measures follow Pyongyang’s nuclear test in January and a rocket launch last month. The regime said it was a peaceful satellite launch.
All cargo going to and from North Korea must now be inspected.
Previously, states only had to inspect shipments which were reasonably believed to contain illicit goods.
